I usually start with the keywords I want to optimize for. I then think about what content would satisfy the audience, and what action I want them to take. It could be download a paper, continue reading, bookmark the page, pick up the phone and call, or place an order.
I put all this info at the top in the reference/production section, and then I start writing.
After I have a draft of the content, I review the SEO best practices to make sure I've followed them. I look for logical places where I can add the keywords. I make sure the copy stayed on theme, and that it reads easily. Then I write the meta tag information, pulling meta keywords from the body copy, and writing the description tag from the introductory paragraph.
It takes practice to easily write SEO copy, but once you have it down it's pretty simple. And I've found this template really helps.
